» Baker Street II

October 11, 2017

I finished a new Baker Street sample last month and I love it!  As I have mentioned before, one of my favorite things about quilt making is the different looks you can achieve by changing one or more of the variables.  One pattern can literally have thousands of different looks by changing the fabrics alone.

In this sample, I decided to do the opposite of the cover quilt which was light, airy, and used a cream solid as the background.  You can see it here.  I worked with shot cotton for the background of this quilt – this particular shot cotton is from Robert Kaufman and is woven from shades of red and blue.  The resulting color can be red, blue or even a shade of violet depending on how the light is shining on it.  And in a departure from the modern feel of the Cotton and Steel prints in the original quilt, I decided to use bold, medium and large scale fabrics from the Kaffe Fasset collective in this new quilt – most of the prints are florals.

The result is decidedly fitting for fall!  The contrast of the rich oranges, greens and violets in this quilt make it sing….And my mind is literally spinning with possible color combinations for future quilts!
